O’Shea Electrical offers smart home installation in Melbourne, from adding a single smart switch to wiring a whole new build.
Our licensed smart home electricians will tell you what can be retrofitted, what needs new wiring and what you can set up yourself. Every job is carried out by O’Shea Electrical (REC No. 36928) with a fixed upfront quote.
Before you buy anything, it helps to know what each device actually needs. Here’s a quick guide:
| Device | What it usually needs |
|---|---|
| Smart bulbs | Nothing. Screw them in and set them up in the app |
| Plug-in smart plugs | Nothing. Easy to set up yourself |
| Smart wall switches and dimmers | An electrician. Most need a neutral wire at the switch |
| Smart power points | An electrician. They’re wired directly into the circuit |
| Wired video doorbells | An electrician, if a new power supply is needed |
| Wired security cameras | Data cabling back to a recorder or network switch |
| Whole-home hardwired systems | Dedicated cabling, best planned before the walls are closed up |
Older homes often have only an active wire at the light switch, with the neutral up at the light fitting. Many smart switches need both to stay powered. We can usually run a neutral to the switch, or suggest a no-neutral switch if it will work with your lights.
Smart lighting lets you set schedules, create scenes, dim lights from your phone and switch everything off when you head out.
For it to work well, your dimmers, globes and drivers need to be compatible. If they’re not, you might notice flickering, buzzing or lights that won’t dim properly. We’ll check your existing fittings and recommend dimmers and globes that suit them.
We also install smart sensor lights and outdoor lighting you can control by app or schedule. If you’re replacing fittings at the same time, our lighting installation team can take care of everything in one visit.
Smart switches replace your existing wall switches, so you get app and voice control while keeping your current light fittings. Because they’re wired in, they still work when someone uses the switch on the wall. Smart bulbs, on the other hand, lose their connection when the wall switch is turned off.
Smart power points can let you:
Features vary between models, so we’ll help you choose ones that do what you need. If you’d like extra outlets too, we also offer power point installation.
A hub or smart speaker brings your devices together, so you can control lights, switches and cameras from one app or with your voice. We install and connect devices that work with platforms such as Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Apple Home. Many newer devices also support Matter, a standard designed to help different brands work together.
Smart devices need a reliable connection, so we’ll help you work out the best spot for your hub and check for Wi-Fi gaps around the house.
For renovations and larger homes, hardwired systems like Clipsal C-Bus offer whole-home control that doesn’t rely on Wi-Fi. We’re happy to talk through whether a wireless or hardwired setup suits your home and budget.
Setting up a media room as well? We can do your TV wall mount installation with hidden cabling at the same time.
If you’re renovating or building, it’s worth planning your smart home installation early. Running cables while the walls are open is usually simpler and cheaper than adding them later, and it gives you more options for where devices can go.
